Reportedly, 40 people died while 53 were injured as a result of intensified bombing by Israel on Lebanon, according to the country’s health ministry. The exacerbating attacks between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, which are similar to the Gaza violence, made several villages along the border the target of ground incursions by Israeli forces while escalating attacks on southern and eastern Lebanon.
The Lebanon health ministry confirmed the scale of casualties from 40 casualties in Baalbek and across the Bekaa Valley following the strikes. Israel did not comment on these actions, but its airstrikes have been targeting the strongholds of Hezbollah in the southern suburbs of Beirut and other locations more frequently in recent days. The residents of the south suburbs have been ordered to evacuate during the offensive, and local reports mentioned two waves of strikes targeting this area later Wednesday and early Thursday.
Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Naim Qassem said diplomacy was not enough to stop the hostilities. However, Qassem did leave the door open for proxy talks if Israel delayed its attack and maintained that any talks would come through the Lebanese state. Meanwhile, efforts by the US to reach a truce have also achieved very few milestones, in no small part due to the rapidly shifting political landscape in the region with the recent US election.(More)
Lebanese rescue workers combed through the rubble of a building in Barja, south of Beirut, where 20 residents were killed in a recent strike. Civilian Moussa Zahran returned to his place of residence to sift through the rubble of their destroyed homes, many of whom are still recovering from injuries sustained during the attacks. Zahran described how his family suffered when the wall of the apartment collapsed and injured his son.
Since last year, Israeli airstrikes have targeted and killed over 3,000 in Lebanon. Most of those deaths occurred in the past six weeks. Hezbollah has reacted by hitting Israeli military installations, such as a missile launched towards Ben Gurion Airport. According to Israeli media reports, there were several projectiles entering Israel from Lebanon; however, some were shot down.
As the conflict continues, diplomatic efforts remain strained. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently appointed Israel Katz as defense minister, with Katz pledging to continue efforts against Hezbollah to enable displaced Israelis to return to northern communities. Lebanese officials, including Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, a Hezbollah ally, have engaged with US and Saudi representatives, aiming to address the deepening crisis.
As the fighting continues in Lebanon, the extent of this menacing provocation in the region threatens to reveal significant global, political, and humanitarian imbalances through escalating violence and strained diplomatic efforts.
