Apple is reportedly in talks to invest in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT and the biggest name in generative AI. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company founded by Steve Jobs is at the funding table as OpenAI raises more money to help meet the high costs of building new technology.
Reports said OpenAI is in talks to reach a valuation of $100 billion in the funding round led by the venture capital firm Thrive Capital, which will pump in one billion dollars. Sk. For months, news reports have said OpenAI has been in talks to raise capital to become one of the most valuable tech companies in the world.
If confirmed, Apple’s entry into the ownership of Open AI would occur as the technology company prepares to announce new iPhones on September 9, which are expected to optimize AI innovations. In June, Apple announced it was making OpenAI’s technology an option in software for top-of-the-line iPhones. Still, it added that AI tools made by other companies would also become available over time.
Most of the AI features used by Apple users would use the company’s technology, while more complicated tasks would be deferred to the powers of OpenAI if the customer chose to do so. Apple did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment. Later, Bloomberg also reported that Apple is in talks but added that Nvidia “has discussed” joining the funding round.
If confirmed, Apple’s strategic investment in OpenAI would mark a tectonic shift in the tech landscape and underpin AI’s growing importance in informing the next generation of innovations.
The move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of weaving state-of-the-art technology into its product offerings. With Apple all set to introduce new iPhones on September 9, an OpenAI feature may boost Apple’s phone offerings by making them even better with advanced AI, particularly in areas like natural language processing and machine learning.
After all, the fact that Apple would even consider a stake in OpenAI speaks volumes about the competitive nature of the tech space. Players are positioning themselves daily in this race for leadership across the fast-changing landscape of AI.
OpenAI has emerged among the most prominent players in such technologies, from generative AI to the popular ChatGPT. An investment could tap into OpenAI’s expertise and allow Apple to do even more with its AI technologies while planting them more deeply in its ecosystem.
But the addition of Nvidia to the funding round puts an extra layer of spin on this. Nvidia leads the world in GPUs, which are essential to AI computations and might help deepen technical collaboration between OpenAI and Apple. The partnership could bring more powerful AI tools and applications that set new standards for the technology industry.
Collaborations among tech giants, including Apple and OpenAI, will continue to advance in new ways as AI evolves. Thus, consumers will receive new and improved technologies while shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
