Scientists have found a new neural circuit in the brain that causes headaches, considered a scientific discovery. The hope for the possibility of discovering new migraine treatment strategies highlights this finding. This discovery could serve as a basis for new migraine treatment drugs, as these painful headaches affect ten per cent of the global population.
Understanding Migraines and Auras
Migraine is a severe disease in which the person feels very sick and sometimes has no control over some of his movements, causing abnormal sensations called aura. These auras are characterised by light flashes, which may include blind spots, tingling sensations, and double vision, and they usually appear five to 60 minutes before the headache. Nevertheless, the subject of migraines and the fundamental understanding of their occurrence has not been manufactured conclusively.
The Study’s Breakthrough
The new study based on the research in the journal Science has explained various factors and complicated processes that cause migraines. The opening of this new channel within the brain holds many files for new generalised possibilities to treat migraine. “These findings give us a range of newly identified mechanisms with which to reduce sensory nerve activation and effectively prevent and treat migraines in addition to strengthening the existing therapies,” stated one of the authors of the research Maiken Nedergaard.

Thus, the researchers believe that new drug targets can be developed by studying how nerves in this newly identified pathway are activated. Some of these molecules are known to have a role in migraines, but it was unclear how and where they caused migraines, added Martin Kaag Rasmussen, a researcher on the study.
