CAIRO: Egypt has welcomed a United Nations Security Council draft Resolution on the complete and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Some of the clauses of the resolution involve the exchange of hostages and detainees, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the refugees’ right to return to their homes. Also, it guarantees enough humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza.
Speaking at the UN session, Egypt stressed the necessity for Israel to respect the obligations of the country as the occupying power as well as to cease its military actions in the Gaza Strip. It called on both Israel and Hamas to immediately and thoughtfully prepare for the signing of the ceasefire agreement as soon as possible.
Moreover, Egypt did not abandon its traditional insistence on the need to find a solution to the crisis by establishing a Palestinian state in the Territories only. It called for the emergence of a Palestinian state that is independent and geographically connected to the Palestinian territories based on the borders of 1967, with the city of Jerusalem as its capital.
The resolution of the UN Security Council tabled on Monday provides for working out the plan of a three-stage cease-fire in an attempt to stop the war in Gaza. This resolution, sponsored by the United States, condemns the attacks and demands Hamas agree to the ceasefire declared by President Joe Biden on the 31st of May.
The resolution is a positive development in the search for a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the area. Egypt’s support demonstrates ongoing active involvement in diplomatic endeavours to resolve the dispute, in addition to its support for the rights and sovereignty of the Palestinians.
This corresponds to Egypt’s interest in international support for the alleviation of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and other solutions to conflict with Israel that might be fair and long-lasting. Thus, endorsing the two-state solution, Egypt restates its firm conviction that only the Israeli and Palestinian states’ mutual recognition and existence can guarantee sustainable peace.
The resolution also underlines the need for cooperation at the international level regarding a diverse and ambiguous problem like the situation in Gaza. It appeals to all the players to keep the human interest in focus and strive for a political solution acceptable to all parties to the conflict.
Therefore, Egypt’s vote to approve the U.N. Security Council resolution and its push for establishing a two-state society shows its commitment to practising more peace and order in the region. This resolution is instrumental in bringing about a change in the stalemate between Israel and Hamas, and it offers these two parties a chance to seek a peaceful means to resolve this conflict so that everyone can be given what is due to them.
