Election Dilemma 2024: Is There Any Decent Choice Between Harris and Trump

Media outlets such as The New York Times are sounding warnings about alleged fascist tendencies on the part of Donald Trump as the 2024 US presidential election approaches. Former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly reportedly declares that Donald Trump is fascist. Op-ed after opinion piece screams, “Don’t Worry: It’s fascism.” But one area of glaring silence is media coverage of the role the Biden administration is playing in the violence unfolding in Gaza and Lebanon. Coverage of Trump’s authoritarian style seems to overlook equally serious issues tied to Biden and his vice president, Kamala Harris—namely, US support for Israel’s actions in the region.

The election on November 5 pits Trump, with his overtly nationalist and controversial rhetoric, against Harris, who has defended and upheld many of the policies Biden enacted, including support for Israel’s military actions. For many, this election feels like a morbid spectacle, where the choice is between two candidates who both, in one way or another, may exacerbate international crises, support military dominance, and neglect humanitarian issues. The question for many disillusioned voters is not which candidate is more palatable but which is less disastrous.

Biden’s Endorsement of Israel’s Campaign in Gaza

Under Biden, the US has provided substantial military support to Israel despite reports of severe casualties among Palestinians. Human rights advocates, including some at the United Nations, label some actions “genocidal.” But critics say that by sending military aid, providing diplomatic cover, and engaging in political maneuvering to prop up Israel, Biden has escalated conflict in the Middle East, and Harris probably will do the same. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s public declarations to end violence sound like an aversion to what is happening on the ground. U.S.-supplied arms fuel increased violence in a country wracked by strife.

Trump Record of Domestic and International Brutality

In contrast, whereas the Biden and Harris regime is charged with empowering violence abroad, the Trump regime saw nationalist, anti-immigration policies take center stage that targeted communities at home and across borders. His aversion towards liberal structures and inability to speak out against right-wing extremist ideologies have made some historians, like Robert Paxton, rethink their notions of fascism in the light of Trump’s policies. Opponents of Trump claim that he, if elected again, would unleash another bunch of authoritarian policies, which would fuel social conflict. For those terrified by Trump’s policies, Harris might seem like a safer choice; however, her administration’s policies could be disastrous abroad, too.

Choice Without Choice?

Millions are forced to vote for the “lesser of two evils” in this election, whose impact either way will be global. Harris and Trump are beholden to power structures that make military power and economic supremacy more critical than international human rights. The United Nations barred South Africa in 1974 from taking part since its apartheid regime led it, leading critics of Biden to draw a parallel to the fact that Biden seems to stand solid for this oppressive regime against Israelis, thus putting the US at a questionable moral integrity level.

Voter Dilemma

Many Americans feel they need more meaningful choices. The voting turnout in presidential elections is rather disappointing—some 40 to 50 percent of eligible voters abstain from participating. Among those who do vote, partisan loyalties split almost evenly. Critics argue that US politics offers no natural alternative for those seeking candidates who oppose militaristic dominance and represent genuine democratic values.

Ultimately, both Trump and Harris present moral and ethical dilemmas, representing what some believe is the moral decay of the American political system. With such limited options, many question the direction of US democracy and the future impact of American policies on global peace and stability.
