Gaza has become a ‘house of death’, says World Health Organisation

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Gaza has become a ‘basin of death’ where people face inhumane conditions and the medical situation continues to deteriorate.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the organization, says that most of Gaza has been destroyed, where malnutrition is reaching dangerous levels.

Before the war, less than 1% of the population was undernourished, and now in some areas 15% of the population is in this situation. As the war drags on and aid supplies are affected, this number will increase further.

Suspension of aid

More than 29,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October 7. Many people are missing and presumed dead, while thousands of men, women and children are injured.

The Director-General has expressed grave concern that the World Food Program (WFP) is having difficulty accessing the northern regions.

Yesterday, the WFP said it had to suspend aid delivery in the area due to concerns for the safety of aid workers and people in need.

Inhuman conditions

The Director-General has called for an immediate ceasefire, release of hostages, cessation of hostilities and unabated delivery of humanitarian aid, saying that humanity must remain intact.

What kind of world is this, they say, where people are not allowed to get food and water, and where even people with disabilities do not have access to care. What kind of world is this where medical workers who save people’s lives are at risk of being killed in bombings and hospitals are closing due to lack of electricity and medicine.

Evacuation from hospitals

The intensive care unit at Al-Nasr Hospital is not functioning. About 130 patients and at least 15 doctors and nurses are still trapped in the hospital. The hospital is without electricity and water, where essential medical equipment is running out, while Israeli military attacks continue in the area.
