According to several recent surveys, Kamala Harris is trailing Donald Trump with a month to go before the U.S. presidential election. A new poll shows Harris and Trump tied at 48% ahead of the November 5 vote. In last month’s survey, Harris had a five-point advantage over Trump.
Another survey conducted last week shows Harris leading 50% to 48% among likely voters, down from 52% to 46% last month. A different poll indicates Harris is ahead 51% to 48%, compared to a four-point advantage she had previously.
Since these polls, Harris has led the average of major polls by 1.4 percentage points. That is down from yesterday when Harris held a 2.2% lead. Democratic strategists are sounding alarm over the narrowing of poll numbers because they fear that Harris is not able to get her race support from Hispanic and African American voters. These two blocs are very important to the party.
Although Harris has inherent appeal among women of all races, she has managed to garner little support from men, especially African American and Hispanic men, who have mostly wandered toward Trump over the years. Harris last year attained the support of only 78 percent of Black voters and 56 percent of Hispanic voters in most recent polls. Both percentages are comparatively low compared with the 2020 and 2016 performances of previous Democratic candidates.
Former President Barack Obama clarified, insisting that Black males did not give as much attention to Harris’ candidacy as they did to his campaigns in 2008 and 2012. “You’re coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses. I’ve got a problem with that,” he said at a campaign event in Pittsburgh, one of the seven key battleground states expected to decide the election. Obama said he wonders whether some men aren’t fully on board with the idea of having a woman as president.
Both Harris and Trump campaigned primarily on battleground states on Sundays. Harris appears in North Carolina, while Trump campaigns in Arizona. Speaking at a Greenville, North Carolina rally, Harris criticized Trump for distributing misinformation regarding how the government responded to recent hurricanes. The problem with that, outside of the obvious, is it’s making it harder to get people life-saving information if they’re led to believe they cannot trust. And that’s the pain of it all: the idea that those in need have somehow been convinced that the forces are working against them in a way that they would not seek aid.”
Trump, for his part, spoke about hiring 10,000 more Border Patrol agents in a rally in Prescott Valley, Ariz. He said, “After I win, I will be asking Congress immediately to approve a 10 per cent raise — they haven’t had one in a long time — for all agents and a $10,000 retention and signing bonus. We’re going to retain them.
