Israeli Airstrikes Intensify in Gaza and Lebanon, 87 Palestinians Killed in 24 Hours

In the last 24 hours, local health authorities said that at least 87 Palestinians have been killed in airstrikes by Israeli forces in northern and central Gaza. Death toll in Gaza: The conflict has so far resulted in a death toll of more than 44,000 in Gaza, with casualties still mounting amid intensified strikes.

Heavy Casualties in Northern Gaza

Israeli airstrikes in northern Gaza killed at least 65, according to Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya; bodies are still being pulled from rubble Friday morning, Abu Safiya said in a statement Thursday.

An estimated 200 people were in the targeted area when the strike occurred. Without rescue teams, the hospital medical staff are currently working bare-handed in the rubble to search for victims. Abu Safiya issued a grim warning, saying that without immediate intervention on the part of international organizations and delivery of crucial medical supplies, “the hospital will turn into a mass grave.”

And less medical supplies are particularly acute, Abu Safiya said, with no ambulances operating in northern Gaza to evacuate the wounded.

More Strikes Pound Central Gaza

Israeli airstrikes targeted the building of a family home in the North Gaza area Sheikh Radwan neighborhood north of Gaza City, killing 22 people, including ten children. Rescue operations are still ongoing, and this death toll is anticipated to increase as bodies continue to be retrieved, Dr. Muneer Alboursh, Director General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, confirmed on Tuesday.

Gaza’s civil defense crews, meanwhile, were on high alert, pushing through piles of rubble to clear the streets amid an escalating crisis in central Gaza. Rising Death Toll and Renewed Offensive

The latest airstrikes came as the country continues with its renewed attack in the northern region of Gaza, which has seen an intensified shift in military activities over the past weeks. According to reports by the Health Ministry in Gaza, since last year’s beginning of the conflict, at least 44,056 people have lost their lives, and over 104,000 have been injured.

Israeli Strikes Extend into Lebanon

Meanwhile, Israeli forces push their campaign to Lebanon, conducting airstrikes on southern Beirut’s suburbs during the early hours of Thursday. Targets included Haret Hreik, an infamous stronghold of Hezbollah, where several buildings have been left seriously damaged, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

Before the strikes, the Israeli military’s Arabic spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, issued evacuation warnings, pinpointing several potential targets in Beirut and the southern city of Tyre. In concert with these warnings, low-altitude drones patrolled the targeted areas.

Talks on the Possible Ceasefire Continue as Fire Flares Up in Lebanon

While Israeli strikes continue in Lebanon, a U.S.-led cease-fire process is underway. On Wednesday, Amos Hochstein, the U.S. envoy mediating Lebanon-Israel talks, arrived in Israel to continue those talks, which are aimed at de-escalating tensions. Earlier, when he was in Lebanon on a visit, Hochstein expressed cautious optimism by saying that a ceasefire agreement was “within reach” but ultimately depended on the will of the parties involved.

The new spate of violence can only underline how precarious the situation is in Gaza and Lebanon, as international attempts to attain peace hit hard their significant obstacles. Against that backdrop, the region’s humanitarian toll continues to rise, with local health officials warning of an ever-worsening crisis if aid and medical support do not arrive soon.
