Protests erupt in Israel after the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sends Defence Minister Yoav Gallant packing. He cited a “crisis of trust” as grounds for his dismissal, and the move has sparked public outcry, with the protesters demanding the resignation of Netanyahu. The dismissal also casts a shadow over the strategy of the war and hostage negotiations.
He was claimed to be related to the disagreements on some central issues, including military service exemption on Ultra-Orthodox citizens and hostage negotiations he’s on. Gallant argued that a couple of painful concessions would put hostage-takers from Gaza into a position contrastive with Netanyahu’s more challenging position, bringing hostages out safely.
After the sacking of Gallant, protests by many appeared on the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The protesters blockaded roads and set fire while demanding the resignation of Netanyahu and a new defense minister who would work to ensure the safe return of the hostages from Hamas.
Gallant, in a statement following his dismissal, highlighted the need for a national inquiry into the failures of the war and reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security. He also reiterated that a hostage deal could be achieved through painful concessions that he felt the Israeli state and military could carry out.(More)
Netanyahu and Gallant have had a combative working relationship for months, with reports of constant disagreements on Israel’s military strategy. Sacking Gallant also highlights the ongoing tensions between Netanyahu and different factions within the Israeli government, including the far-right.
Gallant has been considered to be having closer relations with the US. It is going to impact the diplomatic relations of Israel, particularly regarding the problem of the Gaza war, which continues to exist. Political analysts focused much on the timing of the present Prime Minister of Israel’s dismissal from the position, considering the US presidential elections.
The dismissal has sparked a reaction from Israel’s opposition political forces, which call for more rallies. It is also an essential stage in Netanyahu’s long battle with the far-right politicians who do not support serving in the army and promoting other policies that are anathema to the Israeli center and left.
