U.S. Warns Iran of ‘Severe Consequences’ for Aggression Against Israel at UN Council Meeting

 US Warns Iran

The United States warned Iran sternly at the UN Security Council on Monday, where it said that if it makes good its threat of acts of aggression against Israel or US troops in the Middle East, that will be confronted with “severe consequences,” building up further acts. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield pleaded for restraint, saying, “The United States does not want to see further escalation.”. This will be the last direct contact between Israel and Iran. The Security Council met following an Israeli weekend attack on military installations in Iran that Tehran accused was a retaliatory measure for an Iranian missile attack that struck its soil on October 1.

Iran’s Response

Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir Saied Iravani, fired back at Washington, claiming the US has been complicit through support of Israel. “Iran has consistently championed diplomacy, but it reserves its inherent right to respond at a time of its choosing.” For his part, Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon defended the weekend strikes as “measured and proportionate” while emphasising Israel’s right to self-defence. Danon called for Iran sanctions by the Security Council, stating that any further aggression would be met with consequences “swift and decisive.” Israel does not want to go into an all-out war.

International Reactions

Many members of the Security Council requested de-escalation. China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong asked for “all efforts to save lives and prevent war.” Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that the United States was siding with Israel, and this was the reason why Jerusalem approached its problems through the use of force. Britain’s ambassador to China, Barbara Woodward, said nothing good would come of the violence and seemed that all parties would do well to exercise restraint.

The prolonged war is beginning to breed greater and greater anxiety about the outbreak of a severe war in the Middle East, and the base could be activated through a mistake by the non-combatants. Humanitarian organisations are begging to do something that can immediately reduce people’s suffering due to the war. The international community waits to take diplomatic measures to deal with the escalating situation and monitors both parties in anticipation of possible flare-ups.
