UN Experts Condemn Western Support for Israel Amid Gaza Crisis

GENEVA – Several Organization of the United Nations human rights specialists have strongly condemned selected Western countries for their insistence on going on with their aid of Israel, given genocidal practices in Gaza. The ever-continuing humanitarian crisis for over eleven months now draws attention to the political and military support that Israel has been enjoying from countries like the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the OPT, said in a press briefing in Geneva that many member states are indifferent to Israel’s behaviour. Albanese directly aimed at Western countries for not only not acting and accompanying Israel, which she accused of committing genocide.

Criticising the remarks, Albanese, an Italian lawyer, said that her comments were directed at the Western powers and other countries that endorsed the Israeli operations. “Ironically, to the OPT abyss, most member states either did not act or actively assisted in Israel’s criminal behaviour,” she said.

The UN expert also expressed concerns about the longevity of the seat of Israel in the United Nations, which Israel won in 1949; the blunt recommendation was made to review this membership. She claimed: “Israel appears to have zero regard for this organisation, having assaulted UN premises in Gaza and verbally abused the UN at a domestic level.

Refuting Albanese’s comments, Israel’s permanent mission to the UN in Geneva stated that she is “not fit to hold any position at the United Nations. ” It is worth noting that Albanese’s statements have stirred adverse reactions. Comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict had invited previous criticism. A U.S. ambassador in Geneva once accused her of using anti-Semitic language.

Three other independent UN members, who also can be considered independent critics of the West, echoed Albanese’s remarks about the perceived hypocrisy of the Western countries. The various professions pointed out that the Western nations have criticised Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. Still, they have not said anything about Israel’s aggression in Gaza, suggesting that there is hypocrisy in the system.

These UN experts are among the several independent human rights specialists who advise and report on several global crises. Although they offer opinions, they can be misleading as to whether they represent the United Nations or not. However, this bitter criticism from these experts added some fuel to the already existing controversy over the Western world’s role in inserting itself in the Palestine and Israel conflict and whether the world is doing enough to help put an end to the suffering in Gaza.
