UN General Assembly is preparing to vote on a resolution calling for Israel to quit occupied territories in one year. This comes after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in July this year that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem are illegal. The court demanded that Israel remove all its settlers and pay compensation to any person affected by the occupation. The vote is considered historic, but apprehension surrounds the faith in Israel’s cooperation more so because of support from its ally, the U.S.
Nevertheless, the aggressiveness of the actions displayed by Israel has not changed at all. Palestinian Health Ministry estimates show that more than 41,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza alone. Citing different sources, some specialists say that the number of fatalities is significantly higher if accounting for fatalities that may be related to indirect consequences of the war. Thus, the U.S. continues to play an enabler role in Israel’s aggression and WAY by further boycotting any ceasefire negotiations and providing Israel with some of the most technologically sophisticated weapons. At the UN, the U.S. has always protected Israel from sanctions for war crimes, settlement, and, even recently, genocide.
On a minimum basis, 700 Palestinians, including minors, have been killed across the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 2023 by Israeli forces. Indeed, some governments of the U.S. and Europe have urged minor sanctions on violent settlers, realizing the escalation. That regret remains the same, though Washington continues to avoid applying pressure on Israel. When the U.S. rejects any chance for real diplomacy, then you guarantee the genocide is going to go on, claiming Hamas is the problem and ignoring the fact that Israel is in direct violation of any truces.

China has adopted a different strategy, agreeing to broker the Palestinian factions’ reunion, which has brought the testimony for an interim government that would first preside over the reconstruction of Gaza. This does not match earlier and current US attempts to impose the discredited, corrupt Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority as the governing authority in post-war Gaza. While Palestinians refuse such intervention, it is the U.S. that persists with it.
The world now stands at a critical juncture. The UN must seize this moment to hold Israel accountable or risk being complicit in the continuation of this deadly cycle.
The USA’s support does not only come in the form of diplomatic support to these grievances. It perpetually buttresses the savagery in Gaza by providing billions of dollars in military support, systematically vetoing UN Security Council decisions, and directly contributing to the destruction of Gaza with weapons, technology, and resources. America has a direct involvement in this genocide; it is a facilitator without whom Israel cannot prosecute this genocide.
The next UN vote may be a turning point. A large yes vote may help convince the mighty Washington to change its policy. However, based on experience, the U.S. will not allow any serious outcomes to happen and will thus continue to hinder the move toward world peace.
