As the United States heads into another election cycle, the hopes and fears of the Ukrainian frontline soldiers hang in the balance about what this will bring for their fight. For two years now, the U.S. has been one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters in its defense against Russian aggression, giving Ukraine crucial military aid, intelligence, and financial support. And as changes may come to U.S. leadership, Ukrainian forces are very aware of how such shifts can change the resources and support they rely on.
High-tech American military equipment, basic supplies, and funding have provided the backbone for establishing Ukrainian forces as stronger defensive forces. For most of the country’s soldiers, U.S. aid has helped to continue fighting but, more importantly, to bolster morale and faith that the West is indeed committing itself more fully. However, frontline soldiers show concern as to what a change in U.S. foreign policy would mean for their mission: different political outcomes can affect future military aid.
The front-line soldiers repeatedly tell people out loud about their wishes for continued American support; a few are worried about getting cut off. “Without Americans, our fight becomes very difficult,” says one front-line soldier. But within that hope, many hear and observe the U.S. politics and understand, if that aid would cut, the balance on grounds would be shifted. However, still, it isn’t shattering their desire to carry on as this defense of the sovereignty of Ukraine has come above all kinds of outer hurdles.
The new policy by the United States might change the strategies of the Ukrainian forces to look for another source of support or try a different tactic on the battlefield. Although the rest of Europe has provided valuable support, American support was critical to the volume and velocity of the assistance it has given. The Ukraine’s top commanders have started planning alternative plans if their future assistance becomes less guaranteed. This reflects the determination and flexibility of their army.
Despite the vagueness regarding what change the U.S. election might bring, there is no confusion about the stand of the Ukrainian soldiers regarding the situation at hand. They have clarified that no matter how different it may be in terms of the type and intensity it might generate, the people’s commitment will not yield. As far as those soldiers are concerned, freedom in Ukraine is a struggle for the survival of a nation; hence, none of their spirits will shake. Indeed, one of them claimed, “We will carry on fighting anyhow. It’s our homeland.”
