Palestine & Israel Conflict

Israeli Raid in West Bank Refugee Camp Claims Lives of Woman and a Child

On Monday, Palestinian officials said that in Nour Shams refugee camp, occupied West Bank an Israeli raid led to the killing of a woman and her child. This comes on the heels of the assassination of a militant in the same camp two days ago.

The Israeli military, which had also conducted a raid in the camp on Sunday, has not commented on these latest losses. The health minister of Palestine confirmed in a statement that the deceased were shot in the camp within the vicinity of the northern West Bank town of Tulkarm.

Beyond the death toll, the ministry also stated that four other persons were injured by Israeli ‘live fire. ‘ From my observations on Monday, Israeli armored tanks moved into the camp.

The raid is described by the Palestinian Red Crescent, an important emergency operation service, to have been involved in the wounding of three persons. Evidently, the camp has witnessed enhanced acts of hostility in the previous weeks, thus upping the stakes in that region.

 Recent Surge in Violence

On Sunday, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group stated that one of their critical armed wing commanders was assassinated by a drone at the camp. Minister of Health in Ramallah reported that five other people were injured in the attack, out of which two were in severe condition.

The Nour Shams camp has a history of violence being directed at the camp /people in the camp. In April, Israeli forces conducted a two-day operation, killing at least 14 people, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.

Escalation Since October 7

Since the escalation of the Israel- Hamas conflict in Gaza on October 7, there has been a rise in violence in the West Bank that Israel has occupied since 1967. This conflict was triggered by a Gaza-operated Hamas attack on the southern part of Israel, which claimed the lives of 1,195 people, most of whom were non-combatants, as verified by Israel’s official counts recorded by the AFP.

The retaliation by Israel in the Gaza Strip has cost many lives; not less than 37,900 people have been reported dead, out of which the majority are civilians, reports the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian health ministry said that 556 Palestinians were killed by Israeli military and settlers in the West Bank since October 7. Likewise, at the same time, according to AFP, citing official figures of Israel at least 15 Israeli citizens have been killed by Palestinian attackers in the West Bank.

 Continuing Crisis

The current war situation has worsened the living conditions of the inhabitants of both Gaza and the West Bank, with non-combatants suffering the most. The diplomacy of the international community demanded a new cessation of hostilities and recommencement of the peace process.
