Palestine & Israel Conflict

US to Send More  500-pound bombs in Shipment to Israel for Gaza war.

The Biden administration will again send 500lb bombs to Israel but will withhold 2,000lb bombs because of concerns about its usage in heavily-populated Gaza, a U.S. official said.

In May, the US halted the delivery of 2,000lb and 500lb bombs with concern with the argument that the weapons may impose considerable harm in Gaza based on the continuing conflict that started with the fatal attack of Hamas on October 7.

The administration’s particular focus has been the large bomb attacks in Rafah, an area where over one million Palestinians have sought refuge.

A 2,000lb bomb can easily pierce through concrete as well as metal, and thus, you are likely going to find a large area of destruction. According to the response of the US official, the 500lb bombs were also in the same consignment as the larger ones that had been stopped, hence delaying the bombs. “The position that has been our main area of concern was and is the use of 2000lb bombs in Rafah and other areas of Gaza… because the complaint was not about the 500lb bombs those are continuing in what is a normal process,” the official said.

One knowledgeable source stated that the US had informed Israel about the release of the 500-lb bombs while continuing to withhold the others. Specifically, in June, referring to the same issue, Netanyahu said that Washington was concealing weapons and demanded actions from the American side. Lingering projections of Biden’s aides included disappointment and confusion with Netanyahu’s remarks.

During his visit to Washington, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant noted significant progress on the US munitions supply to Israel, stating that they levelled the playing field in some manner by saying that “barriers were unravelled and choke points were managed. ”

Thus, even if they stopped one shipment, it has not halted the deliveries of the weaponry to Israel from the USA. Reuters news reported that up to June this year, between the start of the Gaza war last October, the US supplied at least 14,000 MK-84 2,000lb bombs, 6,500 500lb bombs, 3,000 Hellfire precision-guided air-to-ground missiles, 1,000 bunker-buster bombs, 2,600 air-dropped small-diameter bombs and other equipment.

Criticism over the Israeli military action has rained in after the Palestinian civil toll from the war rose to 38,000 and Gaza flattened. The current round of violence in the Middle Eastern persistent conflict between Israel and Palestine unfolded on October 7 when Palestinians from Hamas attacked the Israelis in the south region where the death toll recorded 1200 deaths and 250 others kidnapped, as stated by the Israeli Ministry of Health.
