Palestine & Israel Conflict

Over 70 were killed, and Hundreds were Injured in Deadly Israeli Attacks in Khan Younis

At least 70 people were killed and over 200 others injured when Israeli forces targeted the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, the Health Ministry said.

This incident ELOR intensified early on Tuesday when the Israeli army demanded that all Palestinians from the eastern part of Khan Younis City evacuate their homes immediately. Palestinian official news agency Wafa said that people evacuated their homes on foot and carts due to the continuous bombing by Israel. In the beginning, the ministry stated 49 fatalities and 120 affected people, but the numbers have risen later.

The Nasser Medical Complex, a medical center in Khan Younis, is in great need of blood units and has called for blood donations to help the injured. Due to the limited availability of blood, the situation in the medical facilities is critical, threatening the lives of the injured.

Furthermore, Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee defended the attacks, arguing that south Sinai has transformed into a dangerous zone for activities and rocket propel and, therefore, people in the area are at risk. Earlier, the Israeli military had depicted some of the eastern regions of Khan Younis as a safe area for fleeing Palestinians.

It is pertinent to mention that it is not the first time this kind of “safe zone” has been attacked. Two weeks earlier, the Israeli armed forces executed at least 90 people and injured 300 others in al-Mawasi near Khan Younis, which was also declared a ‘safe zone.’ Netanyahu supported these acts, contending that the strikes were directed toward Mohammed Deif, a commander of the Hamas armed wing, and his deputy. Still, there is no official word from the Israeli side that Deif has been killed.

The fighting, which has erupted and has been prolonged, has received severe criticism from the international community, especially after Israel violated a UN Security Council resolution that called for an end to the fighting. After the event on October 7 by Hamas, at least 39000 people were killed in the Gaza Strip, a third of them women and children, and 89000 others were wounded or seriously injured, as per the local health department.

After nine months of this merciless bombardment, much of the infrastructure of Gaza has been destroyed. The region is currently under intense blockade that hampers the provision of some necessities like food, water, and medication, hence worsening the situation of refugees.

Allegations of genocide as serious as this are leveled against Israel, and it goes as far as ordering Tel Aviv to cease military actions in Rafah through the International Court of Justice. This southern city they fled to was home to over one million Palestinians before it was invaded on May 6.

Life remains critical in Gaza; there are daily bombings, deaths, and injuries are high, and there is a lack of medicines and medical equipment. The International community observes the events watched and demands urgent cessation of hostilities and assistance to the suffering Palestinians.
