Palestine & Israel Conflict

Israeli bombing has killed 162 Palestinian journalists since October 7

On Sunday night alone, a Palestinian journalist died in an Israeli airstrike on the central Gaza Strip; hence, 162 journalists died since 7th October 2023. From the medical source in Al-Awda Hospital, it was confirmed that the Israeli army aimed at the Ghorab family house on the northern side of the Nuseirat camp. As a result, Moatasem Ghorab, a journalist from the Majd Freddie Network, was killed alongside four of his immediate family, including two girls.

This escalation of attack has come after an incident by Hamas on October 7; it has received severe criticism from the global society concerning the cruelty and noncompliance with the UN Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire. According to health administrators, these Palestinian citizens have died in the conflict, of which 38,903 are women and children; 89,634 have been seriously injured.

Nowadays, Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe as large parts of the territory are destroyed, and people are chained by a strict blockade, which does not allow importing food, water, and medicine. International Court of Justice claims genocide by Israel through stopping military operations in Rafah that housed more than one million Palestinians before the area was seized on May 6.

This violence prevails unabated by the stated international legal and moral standards of justice, much as the death toll increases hour by hour and the humanitarian crises deepen from bad to worse with each passing day. The death of such a journalist as Moatasem Ghorab proves that media employees operate in rather risky conditions to show the world what the conflict looks like.

The international media and human rights bodies have widely condemned the harassment of the journalists and their families. Some writers note that the targeting of media people bearing the intention of killing them is a clear violation of international humanitarian law specially tailored for the protection of journalists sourcing information amid wars.

The Press Emblem Campaign, an organization that protects journalists, said they are extremely concerned at the brutality of Moatasem Ghorab”s killing, and they want an investigation to be conducted as soon as possible. They stressed that such actions are a manifestation of continuous aggression against journalists in Gaza, which is an attempt to remove the freedom of speech of those who independently cover the events. People across the world are being encouraged to draw attention towards justice for Journalists, especially in countries where such heinous incidents continue to occur.
