Palestine & Israel Conflict

At least 11 killed in Israeli airstrike on residential building in northern Gaza

Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, said at least 11 people died in the early Thursday Israeli airstrike on a residential building in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya.

This has occurred while tension continues to rise, and there is negotiation for a truce in the Gaza Strip. U. S. President Joe Biden recently encouraged Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to work out the details of a cease-fire agreement and free hostages, as the White House mentioned.

Biden’s call came after information emerged that at least 50 Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes in a single day, showing the heavy toll that the fighting was taking on the civilian population.

In the process, while maintaining intensely – with Vice-President Kamala Harris– the argument about the imperative necessity to bring to an end the ceasefire and hostage-taking, Biden. The White House also said that Biden spoke in Cairo with details on the forthcoming negotiations, which focus on any issues that may hinder the realization of peace. Envoys for the U. S., Israel, Egypt, and Qatar are thought to be sitting in Cairo to attempt to bridge the difference between Israel and Hamas.

However, all these diplomatic measures have not moved any inch from the initial stand-off between the two parties. The office of Bibi Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, restated the country’s determination to accomplish its war goal, which is to demolish Gaza to a level that it will not be capable of posing any more threats to the state of Israel. One of the items of the negotiation conflict of interests lies in the fact that the Israelis insisted on keeping the Philadelphi Corridor as their security zone on the border between Gaza and Egypt. This has been one issue that has elicited much debate in the negotiations.

Contradictory remarks from Netanyahu’s office denied tips on Israeli television that Israel has agreed to surrender sovereignty over the corridor. On Sunday, his office sought to debunk the media claims, saying that Israel has no intention of relinquishing this strategic area.

The conflict’s continuous escalation has exerted a lot of pressure on the civilian population in Gaza, with people living in deplorable conditions in terms of humanitarian needs. Since the strategic buildings were targeted, severely damaging the infrastructure, water supplies and stores are limited as well as healthcare resources are quickly becoming scarce.

Humanitarian groups and agencies have been urging the fighting parties to accept an immediate cease-fire so that humanitarian assistance can be delivered and the death toll reduced. However, the prospects of peace remain faint, as neither side is willing to back down. The global population observes events with interest, waiting for political actions to lead to the cessation of military actions.
