Kamala Harris Calls for End to Israel-Gaza War, Advocates Ceasefire and Two-State Solution
The U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has demanded that the war in Israel and Gaza should be halted immediately and any attempt by the Israeli Govt to reoccupy the Palestinian zone should be stopped. At the National Association of Black Journalists, Harris pointed at a two-state solution and emphasized regional stability, stating that they are not empowering Iran.
“We’ve been very clear: this deal has to be made in the best interest of all the people in this region,” Harris, now the U.S. vice president, said to questions. The conflict, which began on October 7, has cost thousands of lives and nearly 100 thousand injuries, the ministry of health in Gaza said. The war started after Hamas attacked the Israelis, which led to the killing of 1200 people alongside 250 hostages.
Harris and Domestic Issues: Housing, Immigration, and Economic Plans
Econ-related concerns were the first to feature on the agenda of Harris’s 45-minute interview session. She promised that if elected, she would invest in private partners to construct more homes, given that housing costs are still beyond the reach of so many people in the country. “One of the major problems that affect people is the lack of adequate stock of homes to accommodate them; it is costly,” she said.
Also, Harris continued focusing on increasing credit to $6,000 and promised to ensure that every American family does not spend more than 7 percent of their income on child care.
Immigration was also discussed, and some recent events in Springfield, Ohio, in which right-wing activists falsified information about Haitians eating cats and dogs, were also highlighted. Harris took issue with the language, arguing that it was ‘toxic’ and ‘bigoted.’
Her Democratic opponent, Donald Trump, has vowed mass deportation of Haitian immigrants if given another chance despite some of them having legal permission to live in the U.S. “This kind of narrative is tiring and stems from prejudice, which ought to have no room in our society. ” Harris retorted.
Efforts to Court Black Voters Ahead of 2024 Election
Harris also talked about organizing Black voters ahead of the presidential election in the country. However, Black voters voted for Joe Biden in 2020. The Democrats observed that some young Black men are now trending toward Trump. This month’s opinion poll conducted by the NAACP shows that while 63% of Black voters are yet to decide, 63% of them said they will support Harris, while more than a quarter of young Black men may vote for Trump.
“Black men are like any other voting group. You gotta earn their vote,” Harris said in the interview featuring journalists from TheGrio, Politico, and WHYY-FM.
Harris and Trump are both campaigning for the Black vote in some of the swing states, such as Pennsylvania and Georgia, where Black people may determine the outcome of a very tight contest. Harris’ campaign focuses on the Indigenous woman of African descent to highlight her bonds with Black voters. In contrast, Trump’s campaign struggles mainly because of his past statements and Republican-led voter suppression laws that are known for suppressing African Americans’ power.
Since both Pennsylvania and Georgia are swing states, there is increased competition to secure the minority vote, particularly among African American voters in Georgia.
