Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant promised any Iranian strike by Israel would be “lethal, precise and surprising” during heightened tensions with Tehran, as U.S. President Joe Biden and Netanyahu spoke on the phone Wednesday, Oct. 9. This was their first conversation since August, when the conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, has escalated.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described the almost 30-minute call as “direct and very productive.” Still, she admitted there are disputes between the two leaders, and they are vocal about them. In the Middle East situation remains tense ahead of Israel’s response to Iran last week’s missile attack that was a retaliation for Israel’s military acts in Lebanon. Luckily, no casualties were reported in Israel following the missile attack launched by Iran.
After the call between Biden and Netanyahu, Gallant described the October 1 missile attack by Iran as a failure. According to him, anyone who attacks Israel will face consequences, and their response will be surprising and impactful such that Iran will not know what happened.
Netanyahu has further warned Iran that at its back will be seen a response to the missile attack. In retaliation, Iran claimed it was ready to retaliate with an attack of such a nature that would cause massive destruction; questions of all-out war in the oil-rich area coming forth as part of a broader conflict as regards drawing in the United States itself.
The U.S. has come out to issue a statement of support towards Israeli moves against Iranian-backed groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, in the wake of apparent, trying measures to reduce the rising tension by how best to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and encourage Israel to confine rocket attacks on civilian areas that have caused several casualties.
According to the report, the relations between Biden and Netanyahu have not been good especially regarding how Netanyahu has handled the Gaza situation as well as the conflicts with Hezbollah. Reportedly, Biden criticized Netanyahu for not being clear on any strategy, even in a July conversation where he vented his frustration.
Despite the tensions, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon said the call was positive and that they appreciate U.S. support. He also confirmed Israel would retaliate for the recent attacks and would choose the sites for their response, making it clear that they intend to make it painful for the Iranian regime.
Because Netanyahu asked for it after their conversation, Gallant was kept waiting on a visit to the Pentagon. In recent weeks, some of Israel’s operations, such as the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other military operations in Lebanon, have managed to surprise U.S. officials, whom Israel neither confirms nor denies.
Last week, Biden also said that if he were the Israeli PM, he would consider alternative options for attacking Iranian oil fields. On the other hand, he hinted that he won’t favor strikes on Iranian nuclear sites-sounding cautious as tensions amid the country escalate.
