Onion is widely consumed around the world, from burgers to hotel meals to salads, while dishes are incomplete without it. While onion is used in cooking at home and it’s an essential ingredient for any food, it makes the food delicious with its taste, but people are afraid to cut it because it causes watery eyes and irritation. Even before cooking, a good person looks troubled due to watery eyes. But now an onion has been introduced which will not shed tears while cutting.

Let us make this easy for you, this onion is produced by a UK supermarket. It is a sweet onion that is ready for sale, it is named (Sanyun) and it will not make people shed tears in the kitchen.

The British supermarket says the new onion variety is ideal for those with sensitive eyes or working with children in the kitchen. Because of its mild flavor, the onion is perfect for use in cooking and it can also be used raw in salads.

 According to the UK supermarket, they are excited to introduce the onion to selected stores from next week, and the sweetness of this type of onion can be used in a variety of dishes, from salads to hot meals. 

This question was so important that it has been answered on the US Library of Congress webpage on why cutting an onion makes the eyes water.

According to media reports, this special type of onion has been bred for more than 30 years, has not been genetically modified, and has been bred through natural crossbreeding.

But the detailed answer is that 2 chemicals present in it syn-propanethial-S-oxide activate the glands of the eyes which are related to tears while the other is a chemical called lachrymatory-factor synthase.

This second chemical is released into the air when we cut onions and this enzyme converts sulfur oxide, an amino acid present in onions, into sulfenic oxide.

This acid then transforms itself into syn-propanethial-S-oxide and enters the eye, permeating the lacrimal gland or tear duct, forcing water to flow.

Tearing during onion cutting is more severe when the knife edge is blunt, which leads to the release of large amounts of chemicals.

Well, you may not know, but researchers at Cornell University in the United States have discovered that onions contain powerful antioxidants that protect against several types of cancer.

Consuming it in food or its raw form i.e. eating it raw daily in some amount can help you to protect yourself from this life-threatening disease while it is also a helpful vegetable to ward off depression.

It should be noted that onions, which cost more than standard onions, were already available for sale in some parts of the US but were not universally accepted. A 2018 review by the American newspaper Washington Post said that these onions were very sweet, so sweet that you could sit down and eat them like popcorn.
