Four people, among them a child, were killed Sunday in an Israeli air strike close to the Rafik Hariri University Hospital in southern Beirut, the Lebanese health ministry stated. At least 24 others were injured in the attack. Representatives called it a significant escalation in the conflict.
The air strike was one of 13 to hit southern Beirut on Monday evening. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted Hezbollah facilities. Residents had been warned hours in advance to evacuate some areas, but not this one, raising questions over civilian safety.
Videos from the Dahiyeh neighbourhood showed residents leaving the area in cars and on foot as the air strikes commenced. Among the reportedly hit targets were about 400 meters from Beirut’s international airport. Authorities reported damage to the airport facilities.
The Israelis said that they had discovered a Hezbollah bunker hidden under the southern Beirut hospital. In this, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that it held all the cash supplies this terrorist organisation uses to power its offensive against Israel. However, the hospital’s director denied the existence, claiming that an inquiry by the army should be mounted in the case.
Israel appears to be broadening the assault to Hezbollah’s financial networks, in addition to its military base. The new airstrikes struck offices of the Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, accused by Israel and the US of providing sources for Hezbollah financing.
In a parallel development, the special envoy of the U.S. president to the Middle East has arrived in Beirut and will speak about the terms and conditions of a negotiated settlement to this war. Amos Hochstein said the fighting must stop immediately, as current UN resolutions aren’t sufficient.
Despite intensive diplomatic international efforts, Hezbollah has not discontinued its rocket attacks on northern Israel. According to reports, 170 projectiles had crossed the border by late Monday evening. Over 2,400 people have died in Lebanon as a result of the conflict since it began with the heightened violence in Gaza.
The situation remains severe, and violence continues to threaten civilian lives and hinder diplomatic efforts for peace. With this in mind, conditions are agitated, and if added to the external forces, you’ll be sure that the world is watching as closely as possible and hoping for a solution that can bring calm to the area.
