Heavy rains in the UAE: What is ‘geoengineering’ and why is it being mentioned

In recent days, the torrential rains in many small and big cities of UAE, including Dubai and other Gulf countries, have resulted in the loss of lives and disrupted the life system due to heavy rains. Flight operations at Dubai Airport, the world’s second busiest, continue to be affected, while the death toll due to rains in UAE’s neighboring country Oman has reached 19.

The Meteorological Department has issued a grim forecast, predicting more rain in the already waterlogged areas in the coming days. The rainfall in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday shattered a 75-year record, a stark reminder that the country has been keeping track of rainfall for nearly a century.

The National Center of Meteorology has said that a record 254.8 mm (9.7 inches) of rain fell in the Khatam Al-Shikla region of the United Arab Emirates in less than 24 hours. It should be noted that the annual average rainfall in the UAE is between 140 and 200 mm, while the annual average rainfall in Dubai is only 97 mm. The average rainfall in the UAE in April is 8 mm.

Regarding the heavy rain in the United Arab Emirates in a short period and the subsequent situation, social media users call it a sign of climate change and global warming.

Could the heavy rains in the UAE be a result of geoengineering, a term that refers to the deliberate manipulation of the Earth’s climate system? According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ‘It is now clear that we will not be able to reduce climate change and its impacts quickly enough to reduce the most important carbon emissions, but the What’s important is that we can find ways to cool our planet faster with the help of alternatives, and by doing so we can buy a little more time to move away from fossil fuels.

The MIT experts add that ‘these initiatives are collectively known as ‘geoengineering’.’However, according to Howard’s Solar Geoengineering Research Program, ‘geoengineering’ refers to a set of technologies in this modern age that can have positive effects on the environment and partially eliminate or reduce some of the effects of climate change. can do.

To understand these things in the book, we spoke to Dr. Athar Hussain, an expert professor of climate change at the Comsetes University of Islamabad. With the help of the harmful effects of climate change can be reduced. According to engineers, there are two types of geoengineering.

The first method reflects sunlight, but this method only masks the problem, while the second method of geoengineering involves sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and preserving it. is taken. Dr. Athar Hussain says that in the two types of geoengineering, the first is terrestrial ‘geo-engineering’ and the second is solar or solar geo-engineering. More than However, on the other hand, experts in solar or solar geoengineering increase the brightness of the clouds, due to which the sunlight is reflected from them, and the earth is protected from its harmful effects.
