Israel: Israeli forces rolled into Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp with tanks Monday, raising the heat on operations in the crowded central section of the enclaved territory. At least 30 dead were reported by Palestinian medical sources in overnight Israeli military attacks on Sunday night. Panic in Gaza and evacuated families grip Gaza with no end in sight to the violence.
Residents of Nuseirat, one of the eight historic refugee camps of Gaza, said that heavy firing was coming from the tanks as they were maneuvering into the area. “They moved fast,” said Zaik Mohammad, a resident. “Some people couldn’t come out and were stuck in their houses pleading to be let out, while others rushed out carrying whatever they could take as they were fleeing, he told Reuters.(More)
Escalating violence in Gaza has now entered its 14th month, as Israel has refocused its campaign on the northern and central parts of this enclave, blaming Hamas for having an intention to neutralize the Palestinian group and block militant regrouping. Thousands of residents have been urged to evacuate and are worried they will never be allowed to return.
Heavy fighting has stretched Gaza’s healthcare system to the breaking point. Health officials at Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat confirmed that 20 people were killed in a series of strikes, including one on a temporary encampment. In northern Gaza, medics at Kamal Adwan Hospital said three workers were injured by drone fire. Despite Israeli operations across the region, hospital officials in and around Jabalia have refused evacuation orders, citing critical shortages of food, medical supplies, and fuel.
Diplomatic efforts to bring about a truce appear stalled after Qatar – one of the main facilitators of the negotiations – announced it is suspending the talks until it sees greater seriousness from both Israel and Hamas.
There are reports that Israeli forces are gradually expanding a “humanitarian zone” inside Gaza, making assurances of allowing in more critical supplies for the blockaded area, including tents, shelter-making materials, and medicines.
Violence has assumed the garb of battles between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters from Hamas and its ally, Islamic Jihad. Both sides are claiming casualties inflicted on Israeli soldiers through ambushes and rocket attacks. Saturday saw confirmation from the Israeli military that it had killed Islamic Jihad commander Mohammad Abu Skhail and five others in an airstrike on a compound in Gaza City.
With the rise of violence in this much, no safe area is left in Gaza. Palestinian and UN Officials continue to warn that safe zones are almost a little short in Gaza, a place holding over 2.1 million inhabitants who are now seeing unimaginable destruction. Considering that the conflict has been raging hard since October 7, 2023, when it started, the latest raid made by Hamas on the Israeli cities already resulted in the killing of about 1,200 Israelis, while 253 persons were reportedly taken hostage. In reaction, an intensified Israeli military operation has claimed the lives of some 43,500 Palestinians, the officials of Gaza Health said.
