The United States announced the imposition of a new package of sanctions on Iranian entities “involved in cyber-attacks using malware – including phishing attacks – on 12 American companies and government entities. It stated that these entities are two companies and four individuals.”

The United States announced on Tuesday (April 23, 2024) the imposition of a new sanctions package on Iran targeting “two companies and four individuals involved in cyberattacks using malware” carried out “against US companies and government entities.”

A US Treasury Department statement said: “These entities targeted more than a dozen US companies and government entities with cyber operations, including phishing and malware attacks.” The Treasury Department explained that these attacks were carried out “in the name of the Cyber Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran.”

Brian Nelson, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said: “Malign Iranian cyber actors continue to target US companies and government entities in a coordinated, multi-pronged campaign aimed at destabilizing our essential infrastructure and harming our citizens.” He pointed out that the United States continues to “expose and disrupt the operations of these networks.”

The sanctions announced on Tuesday are the latest imposed by the United States and its allies on Tehran against the backdrop of Iran’s support for anti-Israel agents in the Middle East and its provision of military support to Russia in its war against Ukraine.
