Palestinian Groups Welcome UN Security Council’s Ceasefire Resolution

CAIRO: The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, its partner the Islamic Jihad and the rival Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas welcome a resolution of the UN Security Council for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The spokesperson for the Palestinian President Abbas welcomed the resolution, stating that it is an attempt to stop the war of genocide on our people in the Gaza Strip. The spokesman for the Hamas also expressed their willingness to cooperate with the mediators and ensure that all the plan principles are observed.

Hamas earlier threatened to reject any cease-fire deal that does not guarantee the ending of the war in the Gaza Strip; however, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to wage a war against Hamas.

For its part, Hamas, in a statement, has accepted the provisions of the resolution, which provided the provisions of the ceasefire, full physical pull out of the Israeli forces, prisoners’ swaps, reconstruction and reconstruction return of refugees, nonacceptance of demography arrangement in the Gaza Strip and humanitarian aids.

Another candidate to be mentioned with his acknowledgement of the resolution is Dr. Saleh bin Hamad Al-Tuwaijri, Secretary-General of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization, as he underlined that this decision might solely save lives and return evacuated citizens to their homes. Thus, he called for boosting humanitarian and development support from the international community to Gaza.

The truce accord, announced by US President Joe Biden last month, presented the cessation of hostilities as a gradual process towards a more complete cessation of the war in Yemen. This is why Israel has only agreed to temporary ceasefires until it emerges victorious over Hamas, while Hamas demands a permanent end to the conflict in any deal.

The war, which is now in its ninth month, received a boost on Monday when 14 members of the United Nations Security Council supported a US-led resolution in support of the ceasefire plan, with Russia sitting on the fence.

The Islamic Jihad group seemed to have positive indications towards the resolution in detail about the unconditional cessation of aggression and the dismantling of the Israeli forces from Gaza. Hamas again affirmed its stance to engage in mediated talks on the realisation of axiological principles corresponding to the Palestinians’ wants and their resistance.

The Palestinian Presidency in Israeli territory supported the resolution, like any efforts that demanded the ceasing of attacks in Gaza and the unity of Palestinian territories.

The continuing conflict has estimated the number of Palestinians who died to be more than 37,000 by the order of the health authorities in the area dominated by Hamas. The war started on October 7 by Hamas militants who stormed through the borders and attacked Israeli territories, most of which were killed and around 250 abducted, according to Israeli claims.
