Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has called for the condemnation of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, terming the country’s actions as “genocide” against Palestinians. His words were released against the backdrop of escalating violence between Israel and Hamas: Casualties are mounting on both sides.
This statement by the Crown Prince comes at a time when Saudi Arabia has been so strongly vocal about this ongoing conflict that it has stirred and disturbed international circles and garnered enough attention and concern from all around the world.
In a public statement, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman described Israeli military operations in Gaza as an attempt to “wipe out” the Palestinian population. Again, this use of the term “genocide” reflects the severity of things on the ground, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians as Israel carries out aerial bombing and ground operations against Hamas militants.
The Crown Prince is now adding his voice to the international chorus demanding a ceasefire. Both Israel and Hamas are being asked to call off the fighting and negotiate.
For a long time, Saudi Arabia has supported the Palestinian cause, so when information came through of civilian casualties and critical infrastructure destroyed, the voice of the country condemning Israeli actions in Gaza came louder.
With the current amount of violence, the Israel-Gaza conflict has sharply escalated. Essentially, a counter to the non-stop rocket attacks by Hamas targeting Israeli civilian centers, Israel’s military raid on Gaza is a reaction to such a counterattack. Hundreds of Israelis lost their lives as a result of the violence unleashed by the Hamas rocket attacks. In contrast, more than 3,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, lost their lives in aerial raids on Gaza, with the humanitarian crisis appearing to worsen inside the enclave.
The Crown Prince’s comments reflect not only the growing frustration in the Arab world about Israel’s military campaign but also the broader geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, which for a long time has been considered a key player in regional politics, has increasingly distanced itself from its past diplomatic stand with Israel, particularly under the influence of the Crown Prince.
The criticism by the Saudi Crown Prince has attracted mixed reactions. International observers, primarily within the Arab world, have hailed the statement as essential to what they see as the excessive, disproportionate use of force by the Israelis. Palestinian leaders welcomed the criticism and described it as an acknowledgement of the suffering of people in the Gaza Strip.
However, Israel has denied the accusation of genocide and stated that its actions were necessary in the fight to preserve its people from Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organization. The Israeli officials also stated that the charge of genocide was politically motivated and did not consider Hamas’ role as a ringleader initiating violence by firing rockets within Israel.
Slowly but surely, Saudi Arabia has been emerging on the scene of the conflict, especially under the stewardship of the Crown Prince as he navigates the kingdom’s more significant foreign policy. While Saudi Arabia long was a stalwart and steady supporter of the Palestinian cause, the dynamics over time have changed significantly, especially regarding the normalization of relations between Israel and some Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
It now puts Saudi Arabia in a tricky diplomatic bind, trying to maintain relationships with all of Israel’s other Arab neighbors and the West as well as keeping this vital support for Palestinians in Gaza. This can be the rhetoric for tomorrow and perhaps even future peace dialogues.
The accusation by the Saudi Crown Prince of “genocide” against Israel has supercharged the fierce debate over the conflict in the Israel-Palestine situation, already fueled by protracted bloodshed in Gaza. Now, the International Community is divided as it awaits further developments in the entire situation. At the same time, Saudi Arabia’s position complicates the country’s relations in the Middle East. It can thus impact the country both with Israel and the West.
