The death of Yahya Sinwar is the most essential news thus far in a long war between Israel and Hamas. Born in 1962, Sinwar comes from the Gaza Strip, and he quickly rose to be one of the most influential leaders of Hamas, doing much to transform the organisation into a powerful military force.
‘Under his leadership, Hamas orchestrated one of Israel’s worst military defeats on October 7 last year, when the group killed 1,200 Israelis and took several hostages.’ It left Israel traumatised, with many calling the destruction it caused similar to the atrocities committed in the Holocaust.’
Sinwar was not killed in a planned operation. He was actually on a chance encounter with Israeli forces in Rafah, southern Gaza. A picture of the scene shows Sinwar, in combat attire, lying lifeless in the rubble after a tank shell had hit the building he was hiding in.
‘His death has triggered shock waves as one of the most hard-hitting blows to Hamas, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cautioned that the war is far from over.’ Although Israel secured a solid victory, it has yet to achieve its key objectives: dismantling Hamas as an organisational and military force and taking hostages hostage.’
‘While the execution of Sinwar might, in theory, serve as a triumph for Israel, the reality on the ground is far from straightforward. The resistance continues, and hostages continue in captivity, with families in Israel frantically urging their government to negotiate first so they can get back home to their own families. ‘
It seems to provide the Israeli government with a perfect chance to intervene and bring home their loved ones; otherwise, they fear that prolonging this war would increase the ratio of lives being lost without achieving any of the respective goals.
The war has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and has devastated much of Gaza, and it seems to be going nowhere to an end. While Israel kills many Hamas leaders, the group has always found new successors who continue fighting. Sinwar’s death is just a tangential aspect in the long-standing survival war seen by Palestinians. Besides losses, the unrelenting struggle continues for the simple reason that nothing has been amicably resolved between Israelis and Palestinians.
In short, the death of Sinwar, while very important for the conflict’s progress, does not signify that the war is concluded or that such a struggle between these two sides is ever over. Both Hamas and Israel will feel more severe implications of his death as time lapses and the dynamics of the conflict continue to unfold.
