Starlink Systems Deployed in Israeli-Occupied Territories Amid Controversy

Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi said that Starlink satellite communication systems delivered had reached dozens of Israeli-occupied territories. On X, via a post on her official social media account, Karhi affirmed that, in the coming days, these devices would be placed in offices of local governments, hospitals and other emergency facilities in northern occupied territories.

A SpaceX-owned Internet service called Starlink provides a broadband connection from low-orbit satellites. The topic regarding the application of Starlink in the Palestinian territories opened in October 2023 when Musk committed to bringing the internet connection to the Gaza Strip. However, this announcement was seen to provoke the Israelis, particularly Karhi, who threatened that his country would use every power and resource within its powers of compulsion to counter this.

However, due to pressure, Israeli officials negotiated with Starlink, and their attitude changed. For the latter, Karhi approved the limited use of Starlink to only some Gaza-based organisations while at the same time extending its use across other occupied territories in Palestine.

Starlink services were delivered to a field hospital sponsored by the UAE over six months after the first talks. This represented the initial ushering of Starlink as an official service in the area. Still, since June 25, people have begun talking about Starlink’s more general adoption by the Israeli government. According to feedback, the Israeli authorities want to use the radio communication devices in the event of an electrical blackout in a possible war with Lebanon.

The chief motivation behind using Starlink in these regions is to ensure Israeli officials remain connected when most utilities are down. Considering that Israeli power infrastructure reportedly could be attacked in any extensive regional war, Starlink is a backup technology. This created system has already demonstrated its potential to capture the attention of warring factions; for instance, in the Ukrainian conflict, it was adopted by several military units for secure voice communication.

This development shows how Starlink’s Satellite Technology is being used in the civil and military sectors in conflict-stricken areas. As for these devices, the installation in the occupied territories has proceeded despite the previous contentiousness surrounding Musk’s plan to provide internet access to Gaza.

The example of Starlink’s expansion into occupied territories in Israel proves the ability to provide stable and reliable internet and communication for territories with infrastructure open to attacks, especially in critical periods. Nonetheless, the use of such a system in politically sensitive areas remains evident and impactful. It has grabbed international attention, and many questions have arisen regarding private technology companies offering essential services in war-torn zones.

While Starlink will be helpful in preparation for big regional wars, its adoption is part of an apparent effort to ensure that vital Israeli state structures have reliable communication capabilities at all times. At the same time, the initial plan of covering Gaza has been received rather rudely. Further developments of Starlink’s activities in the region are expected to spark further discussions, especially about the political and military context.
