Fifteen UK aid charities are joining forces to launch the most ambitious appeal ever mounted to assist people in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and the Middle East in surviving amidst stark inadequacies of food, water, shelter, and medical care. The charities are constituent members of the Disasters Emergency Committee, which brings people together to help people in significant crises. The appeal will raise funds to support millions of people who have been displaced from their homes by the long-running insurgency in the region.
The UK government said it matched the public donation promise it made up to £10 million. ‘The contribution from the public would be doubled, as the government would donate the same amount of money for each pound donated by the public, thus doubling the efforts. The funds collected were meant to go towards providing crucial aid such as food, clean water, drugs, and temporary shelter to the victims of the battle.’
An appeal is due to go live on major TV channels such as Sky, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 on Thursday evening and run throughout the day on BBC radio. The DEC is paying close attention to events unfolding in Israel and says it is prepared to assist its member charities in making aid available to which there may then be significant humanitarian needs.
DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed described the situation as “overwhelming,” especially for children, many of whom have been displaced several times. Families are living at an extreme level of hardship with scarce access to food and health care and being forced to make decisions on how just to survive.
Saeed reflected that the aid provided by DEC charities in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank is a “vital lifeline” for millions. He, however, noted that there was an urgent need for funding to accommodate the fast-increasing demands.
UK development minister Anneliese Dodds also stated that there is an urgent call for humanitarian aid. Dodds said that the civilian’s plight in this conflict was “intolerable,” appealing to others to donate to the DEC appeal. “Charities are necessary to convey much-needed assistance to those who need it the most, and their effort is critical to saving lives in the current crises,” Dodds said.
The DEC appeal money will be spent providing life-saving aid, from medical assistance and clean water to shelter. It will help families compelled to leave behind their homes, where they hardly struggle to survive.
This humanitarian appeal calls on everyone to donate whatever they can to help those in dire need in the Middle East. However small, every donation can make all the difference between saving lives and providing relief to help ease the strain of the current crisis.
