With this in mind, a host of UK MPs have called for the government to take decisive action against Israel after its last military attack on northern Gaza forced nearly 400,000 Palestinians to leave their homes. In this respect, Israeli forces have been bombarding the Jabalia refugee camp and other parts of it for six consecutive days with air strikes and artillery shells after they compelled residents to clear from the area to the south.
The offensive has reportedly killed at least 120 Palestinians in Jabalia, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahiya, although aid agencies warn that the actual death toll could be much higher. Three hospitals have been forced to cease operations amid the strikes. The escalation comes as part of a controversial plan codenamed the “Generals’ Plan,” which will involve clearing the area north of the Netzarim Corridor to create a closed military zone.
This is the policy of ethnic cleansing,” said independent MP for Blackburn Adnan Hussain, who campaigned on a pro-Palestinian platform. “I’m hearing reports of sniper drones attacking civilians trying to escape; it’s like a death trap,” he said.
Others, like Ayoub Khan, an MP from Birmingham, and Brendan O’Hara, an MP for the Scottish National Party, echoed their concerns. They called for the UK government to lobby for a ceasefire and, while at it, to suspend arms exports to Israel completely to expose the contradictions of their demands for peace while continuing to export weapons.
The criticism of acts committed by Israel has risen, especially after the UK suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel due to being concerned that British-made weapons are being used in violation of international law. However, campaigners have voiced criticism over the continued export of the components of F-35 fighter jets, which are used in air strikes.
Former Labour shadow chancellor John McDonnell has called for stricter measures, demanding the UK government ban all arms to Israel and impose sanctions. He described the Israeli military’s treatment of Palestinians as “savagery”.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy has recently visited Bahrain and Jordan to discuss de-escalating violence in the Middle East. On such visits, he was engaging in a ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon, besides what steps could be taken to deliver more assistance to Gaza. Even on such diplomatic moves, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said, “the bare minimum” that the UK should do is end arms sales to Israel.
While the UK government urged for an immediate ceasefire and further access to humanitarian aid in Gaza, the prime minister of Keir Starmer ruled out a complete arms embargo on Israel for now. This stance continues to earn him criticism from many MPs.
As the Gaza crisis unfolds, more UK MPs are demanding that their government take a more vital role in telling the Israelis what’s what and demanding workable long-term solutions to this slowly uncoiling crisis, he said.
