Palestine & Israel Conflict

US approved more than 100 secret arms deals to Israel since October 7.

A report published by the American newspaper “The Washington Post” revealed “the extent of Washington’s support for the war in Gaza, by supporting Israel with 100 secret arms deals, of which only two deals have been announced since the seventh of last October.”

The report said that the United States has approved more than 100 separate secret arms sales to Israel since the beginning of the war on Gaza, despite officials complaining that Israeli leaders did not do enough to protect civilians, and growing international concern about the conduct of the war.

Newspaper explained that the United States quietly passed arms deals that included the delivery to Israel of thousands of precision- guided munitions, small-diameter bombs, bunker-piercing armor, small arms and other lethal aid.

The newspaper pointed out the contradiction between these deals, with senior American officials and lawmakers increasingly expressing their deep reservations about Israeli military tactics in the Gaza war.

Washington post confirmed that only two approved military sales to Israel have been announced since the beginning of the conflict, relating to tank ammunition worth $106 million, and $147.5 million of components needed to make 155 mm shells.

A sensitive military issue.

These sales at the time drew public scrutiny because President Joe Biden’s administration “bypassed Congress” to approve these packages by resorting to emergency authority, according to the Washington Post.

The newspaper quoted details about the “secret deals” from American officials and lawmakers, saying they had requested anonymity because of discussing a “sensitive military issue.”

It explained, according to the speakers, that in the case of other transactions, known in government parlance as “foreign military sales,” the arms transfers were processed without any public debate, because each fell under a specific dollar amount that required the executive branch to notify Congress individually.

Also added that the arms deals combined amounted to a “massive transfer of firepower,” at a time when senior American officials expressed concern that Israeli officials had failed to meet their calls to limit civilian casualties, allow more aid into Gaza, and refrain from… The speech calling for the permanent displacement of Palestinians.

Commenting on this, according to the American newspaper, former senior official in the Biden administration, Jeremy Konyndyk, said: “This is an unusual number of sales over a very short period of time, which strongly indicates that the Israeli campaign would not have been sustainable without this level of American support.”

“We cannot transfer this level of armament in such a short period of time and act as if we are not directly involved,” Konyndyk added.

In the same context, State Department spokesman Matt Miller said that the Biden administration “followed procedures established by Congress itself to keep members well-informed and brief members regularly even when formal notification is not a legal requirement.”

He added, “American officials have contacted Congress regarding arms transfers to Israel more than 200 times since Hamas launched the sudden cross-border “Al-Aqsa Flood” attack on Israel, which led to the death of 1,200 people and the detention of more than 240 prisoners.”

The newspaper reported that the Israeli government did not comment on these deals.
