UNRWA has become a focus of an issue due to some recent statements made by the Israeli government. Nevertheless, the US State Department, particularly the spokesperson Matthew Miller, categorically dispelled the notion yesterday that UNRWA is a terrorist organization and appealed to the government of Israel not to proceed with its legislation to tag UNRWA so.
‘In terms of assistance and other related support that have been provided and is being provided to the Palestinians in the Gazas and other parts of the region, UNRWA has always been very relevant,” Miller underscored during the Media briefing. However, the United States still provides aid to the agency in other means after the US legislation prohibited giving aid through UNRWA today. This position was given credibility by the alleged acts of heinous which were charged on the UNRWA staff, involving themselves in the infiltration of developing the Israeli towns on the 7th of October without any evidence.
I carry on to document and comment on statements by Miller: “The attacks that the Israeli Government has leveled against UNRWA are incredibly unhelpful; they do nothing to advance the cause of get humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza,” This comment was made following the Israeli Knesset passing of the first reading of a bill that declared UNRWA as a terrorist organization and called for the complete withdrawal of any relations with the organization.
UNRWA has about ten camps with 30,000 employees and 5 million clients. Palestinian refugees alone are estimated to be around 9 million people. It has been a lifeline to many in the region. Israel leveled allegations that the agency uses ‘more than 400 terrorists’ in Gaza; this has resulted in the US cutting off funding to the UNRWA. Nevertheless, international observers have described many such claims as ‘unsubstantiated.’
Several countries like Britain, France, and the European Union have since resumed supporting the UNRWA mainly because of this agency. Israel has tried to demoralize UNRWA by relabeling its staff as Hamas members, but this was not convincing because no proof exists.
This generalized approach seems to target the shutdown of UNRWA, the only organization of the United Nations that focuses on the refugee issue in the Palestinian territories. According to Israel, this would mean that UNRWA, working in 59 countries, would be dissolved, and the refugee problem would essentially cease to exist; thus, the right of the refugees to return to their land, which Israel has violated since the late 1940s, would be negated. This right was a prerequisite that Israel had to meet to become a member of the United Nations.
Thus, in addressing the development of the situation, foreign partners still need to reduce the demand for further activities of UNRWA to support Palestinian refugees. Many people consider the agency as a relevant organization in the region and perceive the attempts as adverse to promoting peace and stability, which are destructive.
